Mr. PI 2021
In the Fall 2021, my brother, Benson, was chosen to represent our school's filipino club, the Student Appreciation and Recognition Of Adelphi Pinoys (SARAP) at a male pageant called Mr. PI (short for Mr. Philippines). Mr. PI is an annual male pageant hosted by New York University’s International Filipino Association and Columbia University’s Liga Filipina. Participants from schools across the FIND District III Community (Long Island, NYC, and Northern New Jersey) compete in a showcase of their personality, culture, and talent in hopes to be named Mr. Philippines. This year, the theme of Mr.PI was Carrying The Torch where contestants were expected to represent themselves as they answer the question: "How do you bear your torch? What does carrying it mean to you and those around you?"

INTRO
To start the show, the contestant introduces themselves to their audience by choosing 1 song that best represents them and wearing a barong (a traditional, light loose long-sleeved, national dress shirt of the Philippines, that is frequently made of piña, ramie, or similar fiber, often embroidered on the collar and facing, and worn with the tails not tucked in). This solo performance is where the contestant are scored based on how they are showcasing their personality and charisma.

CULTURAL
For cultural, the contestants are given this opportunity to showcase their pride or highlight an important aspect from the Filipino culture. For this portion, my brother talked about the value of "pagsasama" which translates to "togetherness." Growing up, my brother & I were taught how important this value is within our family and how it was brought down to us by our ancestors. Teaching the audience the meaning of togetherness was a way for my brother to relate to the theme of Mr.PI (carrying his torch about this moral value for his family and future generations).

TALENT
For talent, the reps are given this opportunity to showcase themselves in a unique way through their skills such as singing, dancing, spoken word, and so forth. My brother showcased his love for basketball by filming cool trick shots, the iconic High School Musical dance Getcha Head In The Game, and singing Simple Things by Michael Carreon along with our friend, Brian Antonio, on the guitar.
